After a lull, rains are back in Chennai. So are rain-related woes. Water stagnation, battered roads and choked drains are being reported from various parts of the city. The Chennai Corporation, which recently opened a control room to address civic woes, has said it will function till the monsoon season ends.

Irish rock singer Bob Geldof says he is returning his ‘Freedom of the City of Dublin’ honour because it is also held by Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, accusing her of complicity for what he and others, including the United Nations, call “ethnic cleansing” of Rohingya Muslims in the Asian nation. The founder of Live Aid says Ms. Suu Kyi is a “handmaiden to genocide” whose association with Ireland’s capital “shames us all.”

The Congress vice-president began his campaign for the Assembly polls in north Gujarat with a visit to the famous Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar on Saturday. The BJP criticised the move, saying Mr. Gandhi was visiting Hindu temples just ahead of elections to get votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Philippines on Monday.

Mr. Modi was accompanied by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, Secretary in charge of the eastern affairs Preeti Saran and Joint Secretary in charge of Southern global affairs in MEA Vinay Kumar.

After having been dormant for centuries, Mount Sinabung in Sumatra has been active since 2010. The volcano is now highly active, and is spewing ash and lava.

Delhi’s toxic smog situation continues

The nearly a week-long spell of toxic smog enveloping the national capital continued today, with reduced visibility in some areas leading to cancellation of eight trains in Delhi, according to reports from PTI.

The minimum temperature dropped to 12.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average, a MeT department official told the news agency.

The humidity was recorded at 93% at 8.30 AM.

The visibility dropped to 500 metres at 5.30 AM and later to 400 metres at 8.30 AM.

The Kerala Cabinet is expected to take a decision on Thomas Chandy today, as protests against him continuing as the Transport Minister even after his name figured in a district collector’s report on land encroachment.

Mr. Chandy, the Kuttanad MLA, is the lone member in Pinarayi Vijayan’s cabinet from the NCP.
