Before settling on pirates for Sea of Thieves
, Rare considered a variety of other themes for its cooperative adventure game, including dinosaurs and vampires.
On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, Rare studio head Craig Duncan said that after coming up with the game’s unique co-op adventure concept, the team explored an assortment of different themes to see which would work best.

Duncan continued: “So you’re going, ‘Here’s our creative vision, which we think this is different to anything else that’s out there—like no one is doing this creative thing—what’s the right theme/wrapper?” So when Rare explored the idea of using pirates, which married so with with the core concept of getting a small group of players to cooperate together, Duncan said that was the studio’s “aha!” moment.
Duncan also noted that with the release of Ark: Survival Evolved, he’s especially glad Rare didn’t go with a dinosaur theme.
Sea of Thieves launches tomorrow, March 20, for Xbox One and Windows PC.
